You do not have to memorize every beer style. Start with flavors you already like, then use the menu and the people behind the bar to narrow the field.
Begin with a familiar flavor
Think about whether you want something crisp, citrusy, malty, roasty, tart, fruity, or bold. A flavor direction is often more helpful than knowing a style name.
Consider weight and strength
A light-bodied lager and a rich stout create very different experiences. Check the alcohol level and decide whether you want an easy sipper or something more substantial.
Use style as a shortcut
Lagers are often clean and refreshing, IPAs tend to emphasize hops, wheat beers can be soft and bright, and darker styles may bring coffee, chocolate, or toasted notes.
Ask what is new
Rotating taps reward curiosity. Tell the bartender one beer you already enjoy or one flavor you want, and ask what currently fits that direction.
Keep track of the winners
A quick note on your phone can help you remember the brewery, style, and flavor. Over time, choosing from a new menu becomes much easier.
